Unai Emery’s Paris Saint Germain handed a 5-1 thrashing to FC Metz in the Ligue 1 on Friday night at the Stade Saint-Symphorien. A brace from Edinson Cavani and goals from Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Lucas Moura sealed Metz’ defeat as the hosts saw left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto sent off harshly for a tackle on Mbappe when the scores were level, 55 minutes into the game.
Cavani opened the scoring for the visitors with a neat finish rounding the keeper after latching onto Neymar’s through-ball on the half hour mark but Metz equalized six minutes later through Emmanuel Riviere’s header. However, the turning point of the game came when Assou-Ekotto put in a firm challenge on AS Monaco’s on loan striker Mbappe 10 minutes after the restart.
The defender saw red and it was the beginning of a road to hell from then onwards for the home side. Mbappe then got his name on the scoresheet on his PSG debut with a clinical finish just outside the box three minutes after the red card incident. World record signing Neymar then made it 3-1 curling the ball past outstretched keeper Eiji Kawashima.
Cavani then added his second of the night after he poked home from close range and Lucas Moura came off the bench to scramble home the fifth goal to send Paris Saint Germain to the top of the table in Ligue 1. With 5 wins in 5 in the league, scoring 19 goals altogether, it will take some performance to beat the high-flying Parisians.
