Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield against a spirited Sevilla side that returned to Spain with a point. Liverpool dominated most of the proceedings but in the end, could not manage to seal the deal as they allowed their opponents back into the game.
The hosts were stunned after just 5 minutes when Sevilla took the lead through striker Wissam Ben Yedder tapped the ball in from close range following a mistake from Dejan Lovren. Liverpool though looked threatening all night and got their equalizer through Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino after neat work on the left-hand side by former Sevilla defender Alberto Moreno.
Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool plenty to cheer about when his deflected shot nestled into the net before halftime with Liverpool looking in control of the game. Firmino missed a penalty to put the game seemingly beyond Sevilla’s reach but managed to hit the post with his spot-kick.
And eventually, Liverpool was made to pay after Joaquin Correa managed to grab an equalizing goal in the 72nd minute to deny Liverpool glory on their opening night in Europe. Joe Gomez received a second yellow in stoppage time to bring Liverpool down to 10 men but the two sides shared the spoils.
