Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspurs passed a stern test at home against Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund at Wembley as the North London club managed to get a 3-1 victory on their opening night of the Champions League.
South Korean forward Son Heung-Min got the home team off to a great start inside 4 minutes to give Tottenham the lead but Dortmund equalized with a spectacular goal from Andriy Yarmolenko, who made his first start for the club, seven minutes later.
But a quarter of the hour mark Englishman Harry Kane scored a similar goal to his team-mate Son’s from the same angle. His second came on the hour mark with a left-footed finish into the far corner to get Spurs the three points and lift the curse of Wembley.
What was close to a perfect night at their new home stadium was ruined by Jan Vertoghen who got sent off into stoppage time. However, that didn’t quieten the cheers from the London club lovers.
