Demetrious Johnson is one of the greatest fighters the world has ever seen. But unfortunately, we couldn’t witness him continue his dominance in the flyweight division has his opponent, Ray Borg fell ill and had to withdraw at the last moment.
The UFC was not able to find the last minute replacement for Johnson and hence the main event of UFC 215 was scratched off. Amanda Nunes versus Valentino Shevchenko was automatically considered as the main event fight of the night.
Had Johnson fought Borg and won the match then he would have broken Anderson Silva all time highest title defenses(10), but now he isn’t sure he would be receiving his show money at all.
Johnson told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour that the UFC officials had told him that they don’t pay athletes when they will be able to reschedule the fights quickly. So in this case, the flyweight champion hopes his fight will get rebooked for UFC 216 on October 7th in Las Vegas.
“Usually if it’s a quick turnaround, then typically they do not pay the athletes,” Johnson said. “Hopefully they do make things happen on Oct. 7, if it’s possible, then I can get a pay check. As far as I’m concerned, my black ass should be going to the bank and depositing a check right now and taking my kids to school. But that’s not the case right now.”
“I didn’t get a pay check, so I’m still searching for my pay check,” Johnson said. “They said I have to fight and make weight Oct. 7. Then I’m coming to fight and collecting cash.”
